Thembisa's Steam Bread

2 to 3 cups flour
2 teaspoons (10 ml) yeast
1 teaspoon (5 ml) salt
1½ cups (375 ml) lukewarm water
oil
1 teaspoon sugar

Mix together all the ingredients and knead for 10 minutes until it forms a smooth, elastic dough.
Oil a large enamel bowl with a flat bottom.
Press the dough into the bowl and allow to rise in a warm place until it doubles in size (about 30 minutes).
Bring some water to the boil in a large pot.
Place a bowl or saucer in the bottom of the pot and put the plastic bowl with the dough in it on top, making sure the water cannot boil into the plastic container.
Place the lid on the pot and steam for 25 to 30 minutes until the bread is cooked through – a knife inserted should come out clean.

Note Use two smaller bowls to make two medium sized loaves.
This is very tasty, and you can have it on its own with cheese, or chakalaka, or with just about any meal, especially a casserole or stew.
